The Spiritual Doctrine of Saint Catherine of Genoa

The Life and Doctrine of St. Catherine of Genoa chronicles the remarkable transformation of a noblewoman who abandoned the vanities of the world to become one of the Church's greatest mystics. Through the faithful testimony of her confessor, readers witness the profound interior purification by which divine love gradually consumed every trace of self-will, leading St. Catherine into an extraordinary union with God marked by heroic charity, severe penance, and unwavering humility.

This spiritual classic combines an inspiring biography with St. Catherine's profound mystical teachings. Her celebrated dialogues between the soul, the body, and self-love expose the subtle obstacles to holiness, while her renowned Treatise on Purgatory offers one of the Church's clearest and most beloved explanations of the purification awaiting the souls destined for heaven. Rather than focusing primarily on physical suffering, St. Catherine reveals that the greatest pain of Purgatory is the soul's burning desire for the Beatific Vision, delayed until every attachment to sin has been consumed by God's perfect love.

With penetrating spiritual insight, St. Catherine teaches that sanctity is born through complete surrender to divine charity. Her witness calls every Christian to reject the deceptions of self-love, embrace interior detachment, and allow God's purifying grace to prepare the soul for eternal union with Him.
