📚 St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus Christ, chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. Born to the aged priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth through a miraculous intervention of God, John's birth was announced by the angel Gabriel. Even before his birth, he recognized the presence of Christ when he leapt in his mother's womb at the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Living an ascetical life in the wilderness, John preached repentance and baptized those who sought conversion of heart. He boldly called people to prepare for the Kingdom of God and identified Jesus as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). John had the privilege of baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River, witnessing the revelation of the Holy Trinity as the Holy Spirit descended and the Father's voice was heard from heaven.

John's fearless proclamation of truth ultimately led to his imprisonment and martyrdom. He publicly condemned the unlawful marriage of Herod Antipas and Herodias, and at her urging, he was beheaded at the request of her daughter. Jesus Himself praised John, saying, "Among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist" (Matthew 11:11).
