St. Lucy, also known as St. Lucia, was a Christian martyr from Syracuse, Sicily, who is honored for her unwavering faith and dedication to the poor. She lived during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries and is remembered for her courage in the face of persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian. According to tradition, St. Lucy pledged her life to Christ and vowed to remain a virgin, offering her dowry to the poor. When she rejected a marriage proposal, she was denounced as a Christian and tortured, ultimately dying a martyr's death. She is often depicted with a palm branch and a plate with her eyes, as she is said to have had her eyes gouged out before her death. St. Lucy is the patroness of the blind and those with eye ailments.
