Collection: 📚 St. Junipero Serra

St. Junípero Serra was a Spanish Franciscan priest and missionary whose tireless evangelization helped establish the Catholic Church along the west coast of North America. Born on the island of Mallorca, Spain, he entered the Franciscan Order at a young age, taking the name Junípero in honor of one of the companions of St. Francis of Assisi. After serving as a professor of philosophy and theology, he left behind an academic career to become a missionary in New Spain (present-day Mexico).

In 1769, Serra founded the first of nine California missions, beginning with Mission San Diego de Alcalá. He went on to establish additional missions that became centers of evangelization, education, agriculture, and community life. Despite chronic pain from a leg injury sustained during his missionary travels, he continued journeying on foot over great distances to preach the Gospel and minister to Native peoples.

Serra also appealed to Spanish civil authorities for the protection and fair treatment of Indigenous peoples, advocating for their rights within the mission system. While the history of the California missions remains the subject of scholarly discussion and differing historical perspectives, the Church honors Junípero Serra for his missionary zeal, personal holiness, and dedication to proclaiming the Gospel.
