Collection: 📚 St. Thomas More

St. Thomas More was an English lawyer, statesman, author, and martyr who is revered for his unwavering fidelity to conscience and the Catholic faith. Born in London, he received an excellent education and became one of the leading scholars and public servants of his day. A close friend of Desiderius Erasmus, More gained international recognition for his learning and his work Utopia.

Serving as Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII, More opposed the king’s attempt to place himself above the Church in England and refused to acknowledge the validity of the king’s marriage to Anne Boleyn. Because he would not take the Oath of Supremacy recognizing Henry VIII as head of the Church in England, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.

After a lengthy imprisonment, More was tried for treason and condemned to death. He was beheaded on July 6, 1535, remaining faithful to Christ and the Church until the end. His famous final words included: “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” His courage, integrity, and devotion have made him one of the most admired Catholic martyrs of the English Reformation.
