📚 St. Benedict (of Nursia)

St. Benedict of Nursia was the founder of Western monasticism and is revered as one of the most influential saints in Christian history. Born in Nursia (modern-day Norcia, Italy), he left Rome as a young man to seek a life of prayer and solitude after becoming disillusioned by the moral decline he witnessed there. After living as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco for several years, his reputation for holiness attracted many disciples.

Benedict eventually founded the famous monastery of Monte Cassino, where he composed the Rule of St. Benedict. This Rule, with its emphasis on prayer, work (ora et labora), humility, obedience, and moderation, became the foundation of Benedictine monastic life and profoundly shaped Western Christianity and European civilization for centuries.

Numerous miracles are attributed to St. Benedict, including making the Sign of the Cross over poisoned food and drink, causing the poison to lose its power. He is also associated with the well-known Medal of St. Benedict, a sacramental bearing prayers for God's protection against evil and temptation.
