St. Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Franciscan priest, preacher, and Doctor of the Church renowned for his profound knowledge of Scripture, powerful preaching, and extraordinary miracles. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, as Fernando Martins de Bulhões, he initially joined the Augustinian Canons before entering the Franciscan Order after being inspired by the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries in Morocco.

Anthony hoped to preach the Gospel in North Africa, but illness forced him to return to Europe. His remarkable gifts as a preacher and theologian were soon discovered, and he became one of the most effective evangelists of his time. Traveling throughout Italy and France, he preached against heresy, encouraged repentance, and brought many people back to the faith. His sermons were so influential that St. Francis of Assisi personally entrusted him with teaching theology to the friars.

Numerous miracles were attributed to Anthony during his life and after his death. He is especially remembered for his deep love of the Child Jesus, devotion to the poor, and assistance in finding lost items—both material and spiritual. Due to his exceptional teaching and holiness, he was later declared a Doctor of the Church.
