St. Martin of Tours, often affectionately called San Martín Caballero in Hispanic devotion, was a Roman soldier turned bishop, known for his humility, charity, and miraculous deeds. He is most famously depicted on horseback sharing his cloak with a freezing beggar—an act that symbolized his deep Christian compassion and led to his baptism. After leaving the military, he lived as a monk before becoming bishop of Tours, where he served with great holiness and simplicity, often advocating for the poor and opposing heresy with gentleness and truth.
