St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born American to be canonized as a saint. Originally an Episcopalian, she converted to Catholicism after the death of her husband. She founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first community for religious women in the United States, and established the first free Catholic school in America. Her pioneering work in education and her deep faith have made her a significant figure in the history of the Catholic Church in the United States.
