Although he briefly returned to Oklahoma for his safety, he chose to return to his people, famously writing, \u003cstrong\u003e\"The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger.\"\u003c\/strong\u003e On July 28, 1981, three men entered his rectory and shot him to death. \u003cspan class=\"contents\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Church officially recognized Rother as a \u003cstrong\u003emartyr for the faith\u003c\/strong\u003e in 2016, meaning a miracle was not required for his beatification. He was beatified in Oklahoma City on September 23, 2017, becoming the \u003cstrong\u003efirst U.S.-born priest to be beatified and the first recognized martyr born in the United States\u003c\/strong\u003e.
