St. Kateri Tekakwitha was a Native American woman born in the 17th century who became the first Native American saint in the Catholic Church. Born to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin mother, she was orphaned at a young age due to smallpox, which left her with scarred skin and impaired vision. Despite the challenges she faced, Kateri embraced Christianity and was baptized at the age of 20. She devoted her life to prayer, penance, and service to God, becoming known for her purity and deep faith. Her example of unwavering devotion to Christ has inspired countless people, especially among Native American communities.
